About Me

My Background

image11

As an educator, I have over 22 years of experience in K-12 and post-secondary education. I started as a classroom teacher, certified in general and special education, worked in both elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels. I am currently teaching education and nursing students at a local university and career institute. I completed my doctoral degree in educational leadership at University of Houston-Clear Lake.  My doctoral studies, which focused on at-risk learners, included the school-to-prison pipeline and addressing social inequities. During this time, I began to explore Restorative Justice and the difference it was making in various schools around the country.

My Experience

My passion about the impact of restorative practices in schools was flamed through my role as a campus Restorative Justice Facilitator, implementation of restorative practices as an administrator, and doctoral work.  As an elementary and secondary administrator, I was able to implement various creative alternatives to suspension; thereby, keeping more students in school. I received over 50 hours of restorative justice training including Dr. Cavanagh, Creating a Culture of Care, and Harris County Department of Education-Restorative Justice Coordinator Training. While there are various organizations promoting restorative justice, Restorative Justice Education (RJE) resonates with me by focusing on creating a culture of care in the organization. Holding circles, and working directly with students addressing misbehaviors, are heightened when the adults exhibit collegial, authentic caring relationships with each other and the students. Leading by example is powerful!
